How Does Convection Work Over the Tropics?

Thursday, May 21, 2020

A recent Geophysical Research Letters paper "How tropical convection couples high moist static energy over land and ocean," authored by AOS Graduate Student Yi Zhang and AOS Director Stephan Fueglistaler, has been highlighted in Eos

An extremely idealized picture of the tropical atmosphere is that the boundary layer in regions of deep convection sets the horizontally uniform temperature profile aloft. In this study the authors find more utility of this idealized picture in the real world. Using observed precipitation as a proxy for convection, the authors show that convection occurs at spatially uniform subcloud MSE regardless of over land or ocean.
