For centuries, mathematicians have tried to prove that Euler’s fluid equations can produce nonsensical answers. A new approach to machine learning has researchers betting that “blowup” is near.
New work on the blowup of the Euler equations began in an unlikely place — with geophysicists, including AOS Faculty Member Ching-Yao Lai and Yongji Wang, a GEO postdoc, studying ice sheet dynamics in Antarctica. Their research required a deep learning approach that later proved useful in more theoretical settings.
