Could the Recent Zika Epidemic have been Predicted?

The authors of a new study, led by AOS Postdoctoral Research Associate Angel Munoz, have developed a new experimental forecast system for the potential risk of transmission of mosquito-borne diseases like zika, dengue and chikungunya, using an ento-epidemiological model driven by state-of-the-art climate forecasts. To the best of their knowledge, the study, published July 12 in Frontiers in Microbiology, is the first of its kind for Latin America and the Caribbean.  AOS Faculty Member Gabe Vecchi and UCAR Project Scientist Xiaosong Yang (GFDL) are among the paper's coauthors.
