Event Description

J. Marshall Shepherd, the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia, will present, “The New Era of Extreme Weather — Implications for Vulnerable and Marginalized Communities,” via Zoom webinar — register here in advance to receive a webinar link.

Shepherd, a leading expert in weather, climate and remote sensing, will examine the emerging scholarly and real-world evidence that climate change is currently impacting extreme weather events. He will then turn his attention to how this “new normal” is disproportionately affecting communities of color, the poor and the elderly. Shepherd will draw extensively from his recent research, personal perspectives and work on major National Academies studies.

This event is open to the public and cosponsored by the High Meadows Environmental Institute, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and the Metropolis Project.
