Teaching and Outreach Activities
Instructor, Statistics for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 17 July - 28 July 2006
This is a graduate level short course in statistical methods frequently used to interpret model results and observations in earth sciences. Visit the course web site to learn more.
Volunteer Instructor, UCLA Sea World Cruising Classroom Los Angeles, CA 2005
During my post doctoral work at UCLA, I volunteered as
an instructor aboard the UCLA Sea Wold research vessel. I helped groups of students to measure properties of seawater and led discussions about what these properties tell us about the marine environment. I worked with K-12, community college, and UCLA students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Volunteer Tutor, I Have A Dream Foundation Boulder, CO 2002
I was also a volunteer tutor for the I Have A Dream Foundation. This organization provides mentoring, tutoring, and scholarships to students from low-income communities. I was primarily responsible for tutoring a specific student, but would often work with other K-9th grade students at the center. I had a very positive experience, and I would highly recommend this type of volunteer work to anyone considering it.
Teaching Assistant, Department of Chemistry The University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 1996-1997
I was a teaching assistant for CHEM1111, an introductory Chemistry course, and CHEM 1031, an Environmental Chemistry course primarily geared toward non-majors. Responsibilities included giving one-hour recitations, supervising laboratory experiments, grading, tutoring, holding office hours, and writing quizzes.
Teaching Assistant, The Evergreen State College Olympia, WA 1994-1996
I was a teaching assistant at The Evergreen State College. I taught Environmental Chemistry, an upper division chemistry course, and the chemistry components of the Water and Foundations of Natural Science courses. Responsibilities included holding review sessions, tutoring, and grading papers.
Miscellaneous Other Stuff
As an undergraduate, I worked at the Pacific Science Center, in Seattle Washington, essentially helping kids play with fun science toys. I have also occasionally enjoyed volunteering for K-12 science competitions such as the Boulder Valley Regional Science Fair and the Ocean Bowl. It is always lots of fun to work with kids that are excited about doing science.
