George Mellor

Professor

Geophysical turbulence; Ocean circulation modeling

Research:

My early research centered on aerodynamics of jet engines, turbulence and turbulent boundary layers. During the last twenty years I have contributed to the understanding and modeling of atmospheric and oceanic turbulent boundary layers which are controlled by density stratification and the Earth's rotation. More recently this information has been incorporated into quite general, numerical ocean models of estuaries, regional models of coastal waters, and larger domains such as the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. In the latter case, models that deal with the ice covered ocean have been developed.
