PROFS, the Princeton Regional Ocean Forecast System, is a hindcast, nowcast and forecast ocean model based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), an experimental real-time forecast system is under testing now (see Oey et al., GRL 2005 paper describing the system). PROFS has been in active development over the past decade through funding from the Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Our goal is to develop and conduct high-resolution, accurate model simulations in coastal oceans and semi-enclosed seas (Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, the Santa Barbara Channel and the Santa Monica Bay) under realistic ocean environments utilizing nested-grid techniques, data-assimilations and high-resolution atmospheric models. The quality of the model is monitored and reassessed by comparing the results with observations, and also by attempts to better understand physics through process studies and analyses of observational data.
